Systems biology informs us that the unit of life is the cell plus its micro-environment. Cell-cell interactions and coordination of activities within tissues are largely unknown and absolute analyte measurements via LOC will permit a full understanding of how organs are regulated and interact with their microenvironment. My interests as a synthetic biologist with expertise in quantitative gene measurement is to measure meaningful life processes (in health and disease states) in terms of molecules per cell, as this will facilitate integration of biological data.
